Happiness happiness (as an emotion ) vs. subjective well being o subjective well being has to be high enough (to a certain level) to be able to experience the happiness moments a friend calls happy! broke up with boyfriend, failed a midterm, etc… then a friend calls not so great optimism vs. pessimism o maintaining a pessimistic attitude is linked to depression o there are benefits to being optimistic optimists are healthier than pessimists pessimists get in more car accidents than optimists Happiness – questions we can ask ourselves what are the economic and marital situations of those adult Americans who are most likely to report themselves being “very happy”? o
