ETHS 4350 Course Description This course studies the impact of global trade expansion over the last century and is divided into two parts. In the first half we will study how globalization affects the lives of people in different parts of the world: Indonesia, India, Pakistan, China, Korea, and Latin America. Globalization has had a significant impact on opening routes of trade and markets in Second and Third World countries for export. Yet, the integration of these countries into the global capitalist economy has not brought the rewards (as promised) to the vast majority of inhabitants. Most live in destitute poverty and diminishing environmental conditions that threaten their health in addition to their countries’ economic independence. Their families and living conditions are often worse after their countries are pulled into the global economy than before. We will examine how people in these countries cope with sweatshops and structural adjustment programs, as well as their patterns of migration to the United States. We will also explore their
