Summary of Our Time
John Wideman's “Our Time” is an intriguing essay of his brother Robby and the
hardships of living in the neighborhood of Homewood. He uses three different voices
to understand the characters. These three voices are his voice, his mothers’ voice and
Robby’s voice. There are three events too. Each event has an effect on Robby. The
effects lead Robby drugs, crime, and involvement in a murder. Robby is in prison in
the end.
In the beginning, he writes that Robby's good friend Garth and his wrongful
death that was caused by being misdiagnosed by doctors who didn't care about him. It
is the start of the whole story. The death of Garth hit his best friend Robby. He
believed he lost Garth because the doctors mistreated him. As Wideman listens to his
brother that Garth had been to clinic two or three times, but they sent him home. Even
he is spitting blood, they give him a band-aid. The author sees the changes from his
