Zhixin Chen Dr. E-A Eng 1102 – Section (5) 09/13/2010 Chapter 1 Question 1 On page 33, Etta Kralovec and John Buell say that “Despite the contradictory findings about the relationship between homework and achievement, the lack of research into the nonacademic benefits that homework is purported to provide, and our inability to make solid causal claims about homework’s efficacy, it appears that our cultural bias in favor of homework remains firmly in place”. We did homework since we were young, we could more or less learn the nonacademic benefits and efficacy of homework, why author says we are lack of research and inability to make solid causal? Question 2 On page 33, Etta Kralovec and John Buell state that “Thus far, most studies in this area have amounted to little more than crude correlations that cannot justify the sweeping conclusions some have derived from them”. What does “sweeping conclusions” means? Question 3
