Cholera 21:09 “Fecal oral disease”-spread through the poo Countries with poor infrastructure (sewage) have a poorer chance of fighting  off the disease. Much more prevalent in these areas Severe dehydration which eventually leads to death Rapid killing disease Causes of Cholera     The Miasma Theory  o advocated by Max von Petterkofer o Convinced cholera was caused by miasma; proceeded to find marshlands  and control them y keeping them clean o Florence Nightingale reformed  The Poison Theory o Advocated by John Snow o Proposed cholera is due to toxin in the patient feces and transmitted by  water, not microbes o Affected gut first. Patient has severe vomiting and diarrhea They Contagion/Germ Theory  o Advocated by Robert Koch (1842-1910) o Isolated causative bacteria,  vibrio cholerae, Curved gram-negative rods; facultative anaerobe; fermenter Simple nutritional requirements, doesn’t like acids suggested that this bacterium produced the toxins responsible for the  symptoms of cholera
