Unformatted text preview: Influenza Virus 22:18 Upper respiratory tract infection The Great Influenza Pandemic (1918) The Spanish Flu • 50 million people died within a few months o 600,000 Americans • The shift was thought to occur in Kansas, but actually occurred in France o British army set up chicken and pig farms in France for the soldiers • Effected all of Europe, Spain wasn’t involved in WWI and didn’t have wartime censorship, so they would report their deaths of the Flu while everyone involved in the war would not publish their deaths to keep it from the enemy • More Americans lived in rural communities than in cities o Rural people rarely encounter lots of people and weren’t immunologically strong o When these men enlisted, they were in crowded barracks which allowed the virus to spread o US Navy had a larger loss of men due to the virus • Cinemas, stores, etc. were not shut down when the flu emerged, allowing the flu to spread rapidly • Healthy young adults were largely effected by the disease, mainly because young soldiers were crowded together and had no resistance.young soldiers were crowded together and had no resistance....
