November 9, 2010 Motivating employees This is part of the leadership function of management Content theories of motivation     o 1.  Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Human beings were motivated to satisfy 5 different  categories of needs and these needs were arranged in the  form of a hierarchy Humans were motivated to fulfill the lowest unsatisfied need  in the hierarchy Once a need is satisfied according to Maslow, its no longer  motivational  What motivates your behavior according to Maslow?  Lowest unsatisfied need in the hierarchy  Given that most jobs are specialized, what 2 needs are  typically unmet by employees? Self actualization, esteem  Self actualization=peak experience  According to Maslow, how many needs can motivate you at  one time? 1 Research on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs     Only 2-3 needs that motivate behavior rather than 5  proposed by Maslow Everyone does not climb the hierarchy in the same  progression
