Biology 8/25  17:57 SCIENTIFIC METHOD: observation>> generalization or model>> predictions or hypothesis>> test>> (new set of) observations (The scientific method is inherently a circular process) Once you go around the scientific method, the new observations feed back into the model>> leads to either perfectly fitting the hypothesis, or perhaps you may have to change your model to fit your new observations Goal : to create really good models; however, a new observation may change your model. . rendering the original model unfit. 1500s. scientists observed animals (seeing if they had souls) . . they believed that soul had mass (Weight before and after they're killed) Observation . .simple, yet tells you the limitations of science As time goes on, it become easier to observe things because of technology Science Vs. Truth. . see nb Depending on observation and technology , you may be @ different points on the truth v science line.

Terminology: hypothesis : an explanation for something which has not been tested. or which has only been tested a very few times. theory : an explanation for something that has been tested many many times and proven almost true. . it has validity law : a fundamental explanation for something. Least valid to most valid: hypothesis>>theory>>law Biology : the study of life. Life: Characteristics of living systems : o organization * * o -energy use** all organisms require a large amt. of energy use. o - development o - reproduction ** o - evolve happens in a population: organisms change overtime o respond to the environment** -woods example . . something is alive or not. o **we will learn about in 1201 paying attention to order and size will be beneficial

Scale of Nature: Scales that biologists are interested in: Atomic: 10^-8 meters community/ecosystem 10^6 meters process= same. . however looks different depending upon scale Approaches to Biology: - reductionist approach : take this thing apart and study all the parts… once i study all the parts i will understand how it works - wholist approach : study the whole thing together and understand what it is we are going to start with a reductionist approach o you cannot study something @ the same time with both of these approaches -first part will look like chemistry. Atomic Structure and Why it is important:
