Lecture 14 November 18, 2010 BIPN140 Reading: Chapter 23 Axon Guidance and Target Selection 1. Events of development Induction/determination, proliferation, migration, differentiation of excitability, development of neurotransmitter synthesis, axon elongation and dendrite outgrowth , synapse formation, cell death, synapse elimination. 2. Making the right connections A. For processing information, making the right connections is essential B. 10 11 cells each make 10 3 connections C. Brain doesn’t get wired like a computer, but by developmental rules 3. Growth cones A. Cajal, in vivo ; Harrison, in culture ( in vitro ) B. Growth cone anatomy - lamellipodium, filopodia C. Components – microtubules, actin, myosin, adhesion molecules, transduction receptors, machinery linked to the cytoskeleton D. Movements - extension of filopodia/lamellipodia, retraction, steering/turning, branch formation. E. Actin and tubulin polymerization and depolymerization; actin-myosin interactions. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
