1POLS 3365, Public Opinion Final Exam, Fall 2009 Instructor: Dr. Kent Tedin Answer four 1. Manza and Cook describe evidence for the big effects model of linkage between public opinion and public policy and the small effects model of linkage between public opinion and public policy. What is the evidence of each. Briefly, what is the “contingency approach” to this question? 2. In chapter one of APO there are five models presented which link public opinion to public policy. Most political scientists would argue that most effective of these is the political parties model. What are the three assumptions presented in class that underlie the parties model. What is the evidence that parties model does in fact provide linkage between public opinion and public policy? 3. How are questions about race affected by “social desirability?” Describe the “list experiment.” How does it overcome the problem of social desirability in questions about race? What do Kulklinksi et al find and conclude based on their analysis of the list experiment? 4. What is the survey experiment?
