POPULATION SAMPLE PSYC 1010 Lecture 2 Notes Chapter 2 (Reading for this week, do Chap 1 notes as well!) Statistics stuff in back of textbook. METHODS OF RESEARCH 4 techniques/types of research to be discussed, methods chosen b/c of practicality and availability of information, etc. 1. SURVEY METHOD Consists of a set of written questions that is used to determine people’s beliefs, attitudes and behaviours. ADVANTAGE: Efficient & Cheap to prepare in comparison to others Anonymous – surveyed person does not have to identify themselves DISADVANTAGE: Honesty can be compromised if survey is long and loses person’s interest (Surveyor should do pilot study – quick run through of study to find and fix problems.) Misinterpretation – questions may not be clear to person being surveyed. Questions must allow flexibility in responses for participant Require a large sample PO POP PO POPULATION

In order to generalize from a sample to the pop, the sample must be representative of the population (have to be in same age group)
