Beeee Good 11/3/10 Vocabulary Style: Epic theatre Philosophy: Marxism- products of our society Method: dialectics- trace out contradictions and inconsistencies Key: Verfremdung Verfremdungseffekt Goal: Demystification Put the focus on the world around the characters, set out the circumstances and the obstacles that they face Goals of Epic Theatre: - disrupt the illusion - challenge dominance of realism - inspire change: by not using naturalism How? - breaking continuity in both writing and staging (keep reminding us it’s a play) - by calling attention to theatre’s artificiality Why? - to alienate, defamiliarize, demystify the art form But Why? - to question the conventions of both modern theatre and modern society (reality predicated on the world we live in, can change if we can understand the steps to take towards a positive resolution Epic Dramaturgy: Discontinuity/ episodes Dialects in character Stylized language Scene titles Songs Epic Models:
