12/3/10 Fences The gates characters have found through some of the obstacles Troy and Corey didn’t have a peace-making, Corey is still dominated by his father’s memory because he hasn’t come to terms with his past. Rose and Corey are more free, but they are still trapped by the memory of Troy Raynel is the most free because she doesn’t remember Troy Troy doesn’t learn much from the conflicts he is engaged in, still confrontational with the world/ society Troy is a strong catalyst for changing other characters in the play, characters change is a result of Troy Wilson includes naturalistic style, but he includes the stylized moment where Troy goes into heaven because of Gabriel’s dance, affirmation of what modern drama can do awaken our compassion and empathy for emotional cathartic release Wilson’s Dramaturgy: American Realism - poetic release- heavenly gate scene at conclusion, sounds poetic when you hear the play - interrogates politics and race- focused on politics of race
