OCCIPITAL SYNOSTOSIS Membranous and endo ossification Occipital bones form base of skull Formed via endochondral and intramembranous ossification Squamous portion 1 st vertebrae articulates with lateral part Lateral portions fuse with squama: 1-3 years Anterior to hole in basilar part Base to lateral parts: 5-7 years Basilar part fuses to sphenoid: Sphenoid-occipital Synochondrosis fuses at 17 years of age to 25 years of age

SPHENOID SYNOSTOSIS: - Sphenoid arches, butterfly shaped - Ossifies: becomes bone at 1 years of age TEMPORAL BONE - Has 3 distinct parts: petros, squamous and tympanic ring - Petros fuses to squamous at 1 year of age - Tympanic plate (hole for ear opening) developed at 5 years of age - Parts of bone: tympanic via endochondral ossification - Foramen of Huschke: low probability of occurring (holes remain); term: Tympanic Dishessence occurs when tympanic plate does not ossify, a hole is retained on the underside of skull
