COSC 3213: Computer Networks Assignment # 2 Review chapter 3 of the Garcia text and the class notes before attempting the assignment. Problem 1: A scanner has a resolution of (800 × 800) pixels/square inch. How many bits are being produced by an (8 inch × 10 inch) monochrome image if scanning uses 8 bits/pixel? Repeat if a higher resolution of 24 bits/pixel is used? Problem 2: What is the maximum reliable bit rate possible over a telephone channel with the following parameters? a. BW = 2.4 kHz, noiseless channel with maximum number of levels confined to M = 16. b. BW = 2.4 kHz, SNR = 20 dB c. BW = 3.0 kHz, SNR = 40 dB Problem 3: A transatlantic channel has a bandwidth B Hz and carries basedband (binary) digital signals using square pulses. a. If the transmission of a 10 Kbyte packet sent at maximum rate over the given channel takes 100 ms, from start of transmission to end of reception, estimate the value of B. Assume the channel is noiseless, and Atlantic Ocean is 4800 km wide. b.
