Discuss and motivate the use of data gathered in simple random samples for inferences about the population from which the sample is drawn. The sample can tell us about the population with quantifiable precision. A simple random sample is a subset of n items drawn from the population of N items with a method that gives equal probability to all subsets of size n to be the sample. There are subsets of size n . Simple random sampling is operationalized by drawing items sequentially: 1. an item is selected at random from the N items 2. a second item is drawn at random from the remaining N – 1 items 3. a third item is selected at random from the remaining N – 2 items . . . n . the process is continued to complete the selection of n items. The items are selected in order, but the set of items selected is one combination among all possible combinations. Example 1. Sampling a Deck of Cards. Select a simple random sample of n = 5 cards from a deck of N = 52 cards. The population has S = 16 face cards in it (counting Aces as face cards). The population proportion of face cards is Let X = number of face cards selected. The sample proportion of face cards is denoted by and given by X has the HG(5, 16, 52) distribution. 1
