GLOBISH A globalized version of English, a kind of reduced dialect is already spoken around the world by millions of people. Frenchman Jean-Paul Nerrière has formalized ‘Globish’, narrowing it down to the 1,500 words of English you need to get by globally. His book Don’t Speak English, Parlez Globish has become a best-seller. ARTIFICIAL LANGUAGES A more neutral choice of language could be an artifical one which favours no particular group of native speakers. The best known of these is Esperanto –meaning ‘hopeful’ – invented by the Pole Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof (1859-1917). It is debatable whether Esperanto is truly international as it draws heavily on a Latinate tense system with Slavonic pronunciation and ignores other major language families. As
