History 5 Fall 2018 Professor Sheehan Total Possible Points: 95 Midterm Review Part I: Essays [50 points] Two of the following essays will appear on the midterm. You will be asked to choose ONE of the two. This section is worth 50% of the exam—plan your time wisely! Begin your essay with an introductory thesis that presents the main points you are going to make. Then substantiate your points with specific details from the lectures, the textbook, discussions you had in section, and (especially) primary source readings. A good essay will weave together historical argument with specific supporting evidence. Below each question you will find a list (not exhaustive!!) of 5-8 primary authors that you might refer to in your essay. These are to help you plan your essays, but you might choose other authors depending on your arguments. In the essays, you are not expected to quote primary works verbatim, but rather to refer to specific arguments/ideas you find in them. 1.
