December 13, 2010 PSCI 1014 Charles Walcott Final Exam Interest Groups Chapter 13 Interest groups defined o "An organization pursuing the needs and preferences of its  members through the political process"  May represent people of similar status  May represent people of similar opinions  Groups claim to speak for entire categories, though seldom  actually do  o Differ from parties in that their focus is narrower  Traditionally more involved in influencing elected officials  than in electing them  But int. groups now participate heavily in campaigns - with  money and other resources  Pluralists believe that, on the whole, the interest group system  provides a fair representation of the will of the people. Bias in the interest group system o Olson's theory that it's not rational to give money or time to a  group unless you get a greater return So giving to public interest groups not "rational" because
