Intro to Personality 11-3 Adler’s individual psychology – Says we are all motivated by purposes and goals and we create our own life. (Unlike Freud who says lives are controlled by urges and unconscious). Freud said Id controls us so we are not responsible for what we say and do. Said we are totally responsible for what we do. Said we can monitor our lives and thought. Environment shapes our personality. Striving for Superiority. Like humanistic psychology. (Ex: First born, in control, bossy, king of domain) 3-4 Usually when children can handle being center of attention. (Second born is best off, least likely to need therapy, Mediator in the family, Peacemaker between older and younger. Don’t freak out or get upset in times of crisis). (Last born, get pampered, parents are looser letting them do things) Carl Rogers and client-centered therapy- Used self concept- Individuals overall perceptions and assessments of their abilities, behavior, and personalities. Called incogruence- the bigger the gap between real self and ideal self. How much we need adjusted. MMPI- The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventor. Highly most used and researched self-report personality test. Oedipus complex – In Freuds theory, a young boys desire to replace the father and gain the affections of the mother. Resolution – become like the father. Rorschach Inkblot test- Test can tell you something about your personality. Time to come up with an answer, first impression, portions of light and dark matter. Most traits are negative when it comes to inkblots. Sigmund Freud- first personality theorist, developed theory of what personality is. Made psychoanalytical theory. Popularized psychology. His terms and ideas still in our culture today. Ex: Anal, egomaniac, defense mechanism. Was trained as a Doctor (Neurologist). Worked under john charot. “talking therapy” Talked to patients. Let them talk about what they said, thought. Looked for patterns in notes, led to development of his theory. Kept revising and adding his theory. Clients were upper class women, cause they could afford to pay. “regression”- people frustrated

Thematic Apperception test (TAT)- made by murray and morgan. Designed to elict stories that reveal something about a persons personality. Consists of picture. Person tells stories about pictures. big five factors for Freud’s theory of psychoanalytical 1. Heavily emphasized rule of unconscious into human behavior. What drives our behavior are urges and desires that we are not aware of. 2. Freud thought of human beings as an energy system and that as energy builds in particular areas, behavior happens. Energy moves through different areas and behavior changes. 3. He defined three characteristics of personality that worked together to control behavior. 1. Id 2. Ego. 3. SuperEgo.
