Lecture, 11/08/10 MW 4-5:30PM Professor Bazian  Asian American Studies 128AC: Muslims in America  - Professor Sami Al-Arian o Muslim Palestinian Professor from the University of Florida o February 2003—arrested by the FBI Charged with terrorism  Conspiracy to commit murder via suicide attacks in the Israel and  Palestinian territories o Viewed in post 9-11 hysteria - Attorney General Ashcroft—changes in US law under Patriot Act and anti-terrorism  legislation allowed to make a case against Al-Arian o Remove legal barriers to bringing information gathered from foreign intelligence  services into US court o Came from Israeli secret service - Indictment—120 pages, charged Al-Arian and 4 others as being North American  leadership of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) - Advocacy on behalf of Palestinian cause o Arrest came after appearing on Fox News Invited to speak about conditions of Muslims in America after 9/11 Became an attack job on him o Put in solitary confinement  Charged with a crime, not the same as being found guilty  - Conditions designated under Patriot Act o No physical contact with his family for five years: 2003-2008 - Significant because it was the premiere civil rights case for American Muslim  community  o First Amendment rights as long as no action taken  o His arrest was politically motivated Served as poster child for domestic threat Muslim sleeper cells - Links between 9/11 and Israeli/Palestinian conflict o No separation between the two  - Interest in Al-Arian as early as 1990 o Many cases that developed after 9/11, had genealogy that predated 9/11 o Record/tapping of Al-Arians since 1990s Collected tapes of his participation at conferences All used as evidence by the government—about 472,000  documents - LA-8 case creating interest
