1 Exam A 1. (20 points) A sample of a natural gas used in a process was analyzed off-line and found to have the following composition: CH 4 : 100 g; C 2 H 6 : 240 g; C 3 H 8 : 150 g; N 2 : 50 g If the gas is stored in a cylinder that is at an absolute pressure of 3500 kPa and temperature of 120 o C, calculate the density of the gas. 2. (25 points) Conditioned air is to be generated by dehumidifying outside air (37 o C, 80% relative humidity) to 25 o C and 30% RH in a two-step process. The outside air is first passed through a chiller/condenser to reduce the temperature. Air leaving the chiller is saturated with water vapor and is then passed through a heater where it is reheated to the desired final temperature. (a) What is the operating temperature of the chiller? (b) How many lb m of water is removed from the chiller for every 100 lb m of outside dry air fed to the system? The average molecular weight of air is 29 g/mol. The pressure across the system can be assumed to be constant at 1 atm. 3. (25 points) 1000 kg/min of liquid water at 50
