In early 2005, at the age of 20, a young woman became the foster mother of her then 14 year old cousin. The realization of the responsibilities faced by fostering an “out of control” teen, were quickly realized. After searching for after school programs, sports and other extracurricular activities that would keep the rebellious teen’s interest and away from the negative activities; little was found for the teen that she would dedicate herself to. From this life changing event, Urban Dance Enterprise was born. The foster mother took it upon herself to give this child a positive outlet for all the anger, disappointment and depression that she saw in her younger cousin. By starting a social group for the teen to take a leadership role in, as well as give other at-risk teens the opportunity to express themselves, a non-profit dance troop was formed. Urban Dance Enterprise has since branched out and evolved into the Urban Arts Conservatory, which is a facility for both girls and boys to come and learn the many different “urban arts’ as well as study their own cultural heritage and how it has influenced the urban sub-culture. Providing Urban Dance Conservatory was born of necessity. The need to give local youth and teens the opportunity to express themselves through urban arts rather than violence, drugs, sex and other negative forms of attention seeking. The concept of youth outreach centers is by no means a new one, but incorporating the arts in a way that the local youth can identify with, is a fairly new, especially on a larger organized scale. The organization is a place designed to meet the many different hurdles facing today’s inner city and minority youths and give them a place where they can learn and grow through their own means of expression. By giving them a the media and instruction necessary to expand on what they see on television and hear on the radio, they can achieve what may not have
