Motivation Power and Leadership Motivation: - Intrinsic: internal motivators, mainly “motivators” - Extrinsic: external motivators, outside of your control, in the workplace “hygiene factors” - Need based theories: things that affect how thigns are done; we need them to do our shit o Maslow: pyramid, if one thing is lacking, thing under it has to increase; lower level needs have to be filled first o ERG: Existence, Relatedness, and Growth: a tweaking of Maslow to change satisfaction into motivation, based on desires rather than satisfactions o Theory X/Y: states that there are two types of workers X: workers are lazy, dgaf Y: workers MAY be ambitious Not on a single spectrum, management approach can include both Top of Maslow structure = Y; bottom = X o Motivator/Hygiene: Motivators are factors than can increase job satisfaction; hygiene factors can decrease dissatisfaction - Processed based theories: things that affect how people think about their jobs o Vroom’s Expectancy: motivation force = expectancy x valence x instrumentality Expectancy = whether you think work will = achievement Instrumentality= whether work will = outcome Valence = dgaf or no dgaf?
