Shih - Performance in a domain in hindered when people feel they are being stereotyped - Activation of a social identity can facilitate as well as impede performance - Accurate stereotypes in effect when correct identity is activated o Eg: Asian American women: did well in quant when Asian stereotyped was activated; bad when women activated - Past studies isolated one dimension of social identity - However, not the case as people contain main identities and different situations and goals trigger different identities - Second neglected issue is the effect of positive stereotypes (eg. Asians doing better in math) Study 1 - Asked Asian American women to take a test - Three groups: Asian, female, and control - Each given questionnaire to implicitly identity group (questions about race, gender, or random) - Questions were not created to be positive or negative - Results: women in Asian group did best, then control, and women did worst o Results were among students with very high original SAT Math scores - Results applied for both accuracy and number of questions answered correctly - Salience motivation did NOT affect the level of motivation among participants o Means it is unlikely motivating students to try harder would have made a difference - Data also shows participants were unaware of performance being affected - Data attempted to encompass students in a narrow range of SAT scores (600-800; 750
