Topic #1: The United States Senate has been referred to as the most exclusive club in the world. In contrast to the House of Representatives, the Senate was structured so as to place more distance between it and "the People." How does the structure of the Senate differ from that of the House of Representatives, and what are the typical outcomes of these differences? US Senate vs House of Representatives: 1. Intro: Original Reasons for Creation a. Symbolic meaning of Senate: Each state had an original meaning or reason for its founding (representing a different demographic of American society; Quakers, Protestants, etc), and by saying each state 2 votes the Framers gave each of these demographics an equal say in government b. Also a large reason the senate was included was to sway the votes of the smaller states (used as a bargaining chip); therefore it has less powers than the House of Representatives which was thought to be a better representation of the people (power of the purse, etc)
