“Fog” by Carl Sandburg – 1916 This short poem is full of beauty and depth. Fog is personified in the image of a cat. They both have similar characteristics such as: quietly arriving without warning, and unexpected silence. As a cat soundlessly creeps on a window, so does the fog roll I unexpected over the city. Back in the20th century, it was difficult to predict an accurate weather without the technology we have now days. People were often kept in the dark and surprise by weather events most days. Sandburg gives weather on this poem a personality of its own, just as each cat acts a different type of way. Just like cats give a calm and peaceful imagine, so did the fog during the quiet night after a day in the loud and harsh cities. Just like cats, fog can also be mysterious since one minute is there and a minute later its gone, also you ever know what hides between the fog. This
