The output rate for a stable schedule is 12 units per hour . The average TPT is 11.5 minutes . Calculate WIP using Little’s formula. WIP = TPT * TPR WIP = (11.5 / 60) * 12 = 2.3 [units] ii. If we shut down machine M2 and send jobs only through M1 every 5 minutes , what will be the output rate and WIP? Input rate: 12 units per hour. Even with M2 shut down, the bottleneck is at stage 2. So the process is stable. Therefore Output rate: 12 units per hour . TPT = 5+4 = 9 minutes and WIP = (9/60) * 12 = 1.8 [units] Part B: Consider a shop that schedules jobs 6 days per week. Each job stays in the process for 3 days. The first seven rows of the table give you number of jobs entering for week, leaving and number in the system. The arrival pattern is repeated every week. i. Complete entries for week 2. ii. Calculate average WIP for week 2. WIP = (60 + 65+…+110+65)/7 = 645/7 = 92.1 jobs iii. Assuming stable process in week 2, verify Little’s formula. FR = (30 + 35+…+30+0)/7 = 215/7 = 30.7 jobs/ day. FT = 3 days.
