1Outline the expected functions of the media and evaluate whether or not the media perform these anticipated functionsThere are two perspectives of the media: 1) The Liberal Democratic Perspective; 2) the NeoMarxist Perspective and each has its own perspective and functions. These functions impact the public opinion, interest groups and public poll.1)The Liberal Democratic Perspective plays an important role in the liberal society to protect democratic values. -The media is the 4thbranch of the government informing the public of essential information that help people to make effective political decisions -Allows the government to express and convey its idea to its citizens -The media spreads crucial information about the government -Holds the government accountable (Acts as a watchdog)-Provides a platform for diverse perspectives-The media keeps democracy alive-During elections, the media promotes government and provides a platform for opposition which allows for different views and perspectives-The media is a “Democracy oxygen” (i.e. Democracy needs oxygen and that oxygen is the media but media strips individual of what they need to know. News sources care for a specific ideology2)The Neo Marxist Perspective-The media is a tool for the rich-Media in the liberal society are tools and devices to justify the main principles of society -Status quo system-There is monopoly, bias agendas, limitation of news, no diverse perspective-Ownership Concentration: Newspapers are controlled by few wealthy families such as Asper, Irving). -Radio only has 650 local AM and FM stations but 60% of the market was controlled by only 10 leading firms in 2000s-Media has a horizontal and vertical integration, meaning it merges and crosses ownership (e.g. Bell media, Rogers communications, Shaw, Quebecor)-Revenue is generated by ads and this eliminates competition and creates pressure towards uniformity view. Hence, the independence of journalists comes into question.-There is a relationship between politicians and reportersTherefore, the media performs both functions. The media tells us what to think about and talk about. It concentrates on certain issues, creates debate. During elections, it shows opinion polls. On the other hand, the media also concentrates on specific political parties and forget others (i.e. Trump in the U.S.A for example - mass coverage). The media uses technology such as internet,
social media to promote its message (such as Facebook, Twitter). The media can be broken into different perspective (Conservative and Liberal).
