Midway Auto 295 M-140 South Watervliet, MI 49098 269/519-3227 Memorandum To: Victoria Gano, President From: Barbi Hammond, Controller/HR Date: September 14, 2010 Subject: Research Proposal to Repeal Mandatory Overtime The following proposal will outline the reasons that Midway Auto should repeal mandatory overtime. Although mandatory overtime helps to ensure customer satisfaction by getting customer vehicles repaired on time, it is very costly to the company. Forcing employees to work overtime ends up costing the organization more in the long run. Overworked employees have lower job satisfaction rates and more health issues than those who work only a normal 40 hour work week. Repealing mandatory overtime will help Midway Auto retain long term employees, reduce turnover rates and decrease employee health care costs. Midway has lost 8 employees in the last six months. I believe that this loss is a direct result of employee dissatisfaction. Midway is a small company and the loss of these employees puts our turnover rate at 72%. This number is unacceptable for a company of our size. Midway Auto has also experienced a significant increase in employee healthcare cost over the same time period. Loren Stein (n.d.), author of Work and Health Mandatory Overtime said that, “Mandatory overtime has become a daily reality for millions of American workers. Many employees welcome the opportunity to work overtime for the added wages. But for others, the expanded workweek has led to stress, exhaustion, and stress-related health problems and injuries.” My Proposal Repeal Mandatory Overtime will outline how Midway Auto can maintain excellent employee relations thus retaining quality employees and reducing turnover rates. If you have any questions regarding the proposal, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone 269.529.9999 or via email barbi.hammond@gmail.com . Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
