Unformatted text preview: 9-7FUNTIONS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE-Investigation-must determine who committed violations -law enforcement determines this-to follow up or conduct a search, step by step by patient inquiry or observationto trace or track clues, examining with care and accuracy, each and every detail.-get at the truth of what happened -Complaint-machinery of criminal justice begins with complaint and then-Warrant-continuing of criminal justice-Criminal Justice as an assembly line-ends with a closed case -Inner Perimeter-immediate area where crime was committed-Outer Perimeter-doors, windows etc.-Extended Perimeter-anywhere else where evidence of the crime was found-First Responder-initial response to crime scene-first responder is not usually an investigatorusually a uniformed patrol officer. -after investigating, you must secure the crime scene-tape, squad car, existing boundaries etc.-look for impressions (foot prints, tire tracks)-authorized personnel begin to show up-medical examiner-news reporters-detectives -CSI personnel -Medical Examiner -COD-Cause of Death-TOD-Time of Death-most important for the investigation -MOD-Manner of Death-homicide suicide etc. -Lead Detective-assess the crime scene boundaries -sets up a nearby temporary headquarters for other investigators where they can consult in private -ensuring that all witnesses are identifiedeach are given a witness statement as to what they saw or heard-Canvass-going around house to house and asking residents if they have seen anything strange around the neighborhood-Transient Evidence-an odor-impression evidence-footprints, tire prints etc.-types of physical evidence (look at handout)-Lead detectives call to prioritize investigation -Chain of Custody-evidence gathering-dont break chain of custody-comparison samples must be labeled correctly-immediately secure electronic evidence-answering machine-security tapes-computers-secure all pieces of evidence to avoid contamination-document the condition of firearms before rendering them safe for transportation9-9-Toxicology -can detect overdoses, blood alcohol levels, if they were poisoned etc. -Autopsy -anytime there is a sudden death-Forensic odontologist-teeth-Forensic Engineers-Army-Experts at deciphering bombings-Forensic Entomologist -helps to determine time of deathWORD OF MOUTH EVIDENCE-2 Methods used to gather WOM-Interviewing: Process by which an investigator seeks, obtains and evaluates info given to him by persons who may have personal knowledge of events or circumstances of a crime-purposeful and planned conversationspurpose is to gather info pertinent to an investigationcanvassing is a series of interviews -Interrogation: adversarial processmore accusatory than the basic interview -systematic questioning in a formal setting where the subject is resistant to participate-you can use psychological pressure -Interrogation-requires specific trainingboth an art and a science-must learn how to be an active listener -must be in tune with body language...
