VITAMIN B2 Vitamin B2 also known as Riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin. We can acquire it from our daily diet or from supplements. Our bodies cannot manufacture it. In our bodies, it is required by many enzymes as cofactors, which help to carry out certain aspects of catalytic action that is vital in our day-to-day lives. According to statistics, not many people who are on the typical western diet suffer from deficiency of vitamin b2 since most of the foods as the cereals fortified with them. In this paper, I will be writing about what vitamin b2 are its functions, sources and symptoms of deficiency of vitamin b2. Vitamin B2 is a water-soluble vitamin, which means it has the polar group such as –OH and –COOH that enables it to be soluble in the water environment of our cells. Because of this, we need to be constantly replenishing it in our diets since our body cannot store it. The disadvantage of vitamin b2 is that, we cannot store it in our cells like the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E & K could, so there is a more likely hood of experiencing deficiency in them when we are not constantly taking it in our diet. But on the other hand, the advantage with water – soluble vitamins, unlike fat soluble vitamins, water soluble vitamins rarely reach toxic levels in our bodies since we are constantly excreting the excess in our urine.
