Collision theory – in order for 2 molecules to interact that must collide, 2 molecule collisions are more freq. than 3 mol. Balanced equation – is the sum of all elementary systems Reaction mechanisms – sequence of steps (cross out to get equation) Reactant intermediates – produced in step 1 and consumed later steps [if the initial concentration is doubled, rate of reaction will increase b/c it’s the determining step, if another (b) was doubled, it is after determining step of A so rate would stay the same.] Activation energy - minimum collision energy threshold be4 anything happens. If c. energy is less – molecules bounce off, elastic… FAST elementary step means low Ea SLOW means high EA Exothermic-looses heat, ^H neg (enthalpy) Endo-gain, ^H pos (no relationship b/w 6H and activation e) (1 st order)UNI SLOW STEP AB-> A+B Rate of reaction proportional to concentration Rate of change proportional (stuff in slow step) Rate is proportional to neg. concentration stuff rate = -K(amount of stuff)
