General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner Faces an Overwhelming Managerial Challenge. Managing employees and an organization requires balancing the financial health of the company with innovation. This case focuses on GM CEO Rick Wagoner and his efforts at turning the car manufacturer around. 1. Which of the six managerial challenges discussed in this chapter did Rick Wagoner face as CEO of General Motors? Discuss. Answer: Wagoner’s principal challenge was challenge #1: managing for competitive advantage— staying ahead of rivals. This challenge means a company must stay ahead in four areas: (1) being responsive to customers, (2) innovation, (3) quality, and (4) efficiency. Wagoner concentrated on the last three. Improving innovation, quality, and efficiency consisted of finding ways to cut costs significantly while focusing on the other three of his goals---build great cars and trucks, revitalize sales and marketing, and fixing health care.
