ESP 178 – Applied Research Methods Research Concept Assignment NOTE THAT THERE ARE THREE DUE DATES FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT!!! Draft for Peer Review Due: Thursday, February 25, 2010 Written Peer Reviews Due: Tuesday, March 2, 2010 Final Research Concept Due: Thursday, March 11, 2010 (last day of class) Length: 4-5 pages, double-spaced Grade: 25% of total course grade Submit ALL required pieces as Microsoft Word file attachments on SmartSite!!! In this final assignment, you get to put together many of the things you’ve learned in this course by writing a research concept. A research concept is a baby version of a research proposal. It includes most of the same elements as a full proposal, but less detail on each one. Sometimes agencies that fund research will ask for a short “research concept” first, then choose the best of these to request full written (much longer) proposals, and finally choose among these when deciding which research projects to fund. As promised in the beginning of the quarter, you will get to choose from Bret and my favorite research questions from your first assignment. This means that if your research question is on the list at the end of this assignment (or something close to your research question), you are free to choose it and use the references you found back in January. Many of the questions are re-worded a bit in an attempt to make them clearer. Even if your question is on the list, you can still choose a different question. I do not expect you to come up with a totally original approach to the research question that you choose. Many – if not most – of these research questions have already been investigated quite thoroughly. The point of this assignment is for you to practice thinking through the full research planning process and writing out your ideas. GRADING: You will be graded on a 70-point scale: 10 points for providing appropriate context for your research question 10 points for quickly reviewing and properly citing at least 3 journal articles or books - Remember to properly cite them in the text (author(s), date) AND to include a references section with full bibliographic citations at the end!
