Jazz Rock: Part 1 Both jazz and rock have similar black parentage. Jazz is older than rock but went through same growing pains. Illiterate musicians. By rock’s beginning jazz was already highly sophisticated (50’s) Jazz is 1 of 2 uniquely American art forms Other is Broadway musicals Jazz was started in the U.S. Roots of Jazz - Popular songs - Blues, 12-bar blues - Ragtime – Scott Joplin “Maple Leaf Rag” Very first piece of sheet music that sold over a million copies in the U.S. - Brass bands - Gospel music Any popular song can be turned into jazz if you give it swing Defining Jazz - Swing: offbeat syncopation - Improvisation: composing at the same time you are performing - Flatted blues notes (lower 3, 6, 7 note of scale) - Use of vibrato and tone-bending Rhythm section… piano, bass, drums (keeps it driving forward) Just a piano, bass and drums called Jazz Trio
