Fast o II. Slow o III. Dance (usually in triple meter – minuet – slow or scherzo – fast) o IV. Fast - Symphony has 2 meanings… could refer to an orchestra or name of a work “5 th symphony” Sonata Form (First movement form)… 1. Exposition Main theme – generally lively, fast, rhythmic Second or contrasting theme – usually lyric 2. Development Both themes are used Composer shows off… present themes in creative ways 3. Recapitulation Main and second themes come back the way they were 4. Coda… BIG FINISH Beethoven – Symphony No. 5 in C minor… First Movement Follows same format except he adds main theme and second theme again in exposition From the classic period, form perfect, but not weak at all
