Slide 2 In 1965, the band changes their name to the Grateful Dead. The first show under the new name Grateful Dead was in San Jose, California on December 4, 1965, at one of Ken Kesey 's Acid Tests . According to Phil Lesh, Garcia found the name spontaneously when he picked up a dictionary and the pages fell open. The words 'grateful' and 'dead' appeared straight opposite each other across the crack between the pages in unrelated text." Throughout the years the band included 12 members. Slide 3 Jerry Garcia- the lead guitarist of the band. Died of a heart attack in 1995. Bob Weir- rhythm guitarist Phil Lesh- played bass Bill Kruetzman- Bill has been the steady beating heart of the Grateful Dead's rhythm section for forty years. Drummer Mickey Hart- marching band style drummer (joined in 1967) Robert Hunter- wrote songs for the band. Joined in the fall of 1967 Ron “Pigpen” McKernan- started the rockband up.
