Sampling Process 6 EE 401 Digital Communications Formatting and Pulse/Baseband modulation Format transformation from information-bearing (source) signal to digital symbols (and reverse operation in the receiver side) ensure that the message (information bearing or source signal) is compatible with digital processing After formatting, message signal is represented by sequence of ones and zeros, a bit stream (no pulse shape is defined yet) Pulse Modulate It is impossible to transmit binary digits without first transforming them into waveforms compatible with the baseband channel (a coaxial cable, two wire lines or a coducting line on a PC board) Compatible waveforms for baseband channel are “ pulses ” (on-off keying of electrical voltage/current) Pulse modulation is process at which bit stream (sequence of logical digits) are transformed into a sequence of pulses(electrical signals)
