Maria DePumpo Note Pool 11/23 Social Cognitive Theories Focuses on one part of behavior in psychopathology: depression Martin Seligman: learned helplessness Did an important study in which he separated dogs into three groups (control-put in shock harness and moved to a room with the other dogs, controllable shock- they could turn the shock of by pressing a button, uncontrollable shock-had no control over the shocks) When something bad happens to you, there’s nothing you can do about it -> this is what happens to you in depression Locus of Control ( by Rotter): 2 types: Internal- when something happens to you and you take responsibility for it (Rotter states that if you blame yourself and it’s not your fault, it prevents you from being depressed because you are thought to be in control) External-blame the situation on someone/something else (inherits that there are things in the world that come in between you and what you want; more likely to be depressed) Self Efficacy (by Bandura):
