FA/MUSI 1520 Lecture 4 Nathaniel Adams Coles a.k.a Nat King Cole 1945 – End of WWII 1946-1955 – Nat King Cole was most famous in this time. 1956 – Elvis emerges 1964 – The Beatles emerge Nat King Cole Nat King Cole grew up in Chicago but was born down south. Nat’s big break came in 1943 whilst he was playing at the Radio Room in L.A. A man named Johnny Mercer, one of the exectitive of the newly formed record company, Capital Records. He joined Capital Records and became on of the most successful artist. The building was became known as “The House That Nat Built”. His first recording he ever did was called, Straighten Up and Fly Right. Straighten Up and Fly Right – Nat King Cole Route 66 – Nat King Cole Maria Elington was an intelligent sophisticated young singer whom Cole met in 1946. He left his wife and married her.
