Lecture #5 Ray Charles Ray Charles had an obsession with Nat King Cole. He did everything like Nat King Cole and wanted to do everything like him. He went from Florida to Seattle. He did many styles and did a lot of different things every week. Rocking Chair Blues – Ray Charles Sentimental Blues – Ray Charles While he was doing radio stations, he got a liking for one of the ladies in the gospel group. She’s on the ball – Ray Charles Kissa Me Baby – Ray Charles He wife always told him to change up his style because he tried to be too many artists. Kissa me baby sounded exactly like Little Richard. The reason we hear about Ray Charles today is because of Lloyd Price. Ray Charles signs with Atlantic Records. Ray Charles fell in love with The Cookies leading ladies. I Gotta Woman – Ray Charles Ray transformed a gospel song into a womanized soul song. The birth of Soul music came from Ray Charles transforming this gospel song into a song with secular lyrics. Between1954 and 1964, Ray Charles and Elvis were the biggest acts.
