Rasheedah Duffy December 10, 2010 Hum 130 CkPoint: Five Pillars of Islam What are the central beliefs of Islam, and how are they reflected in the "Five Pillars”? 1. The Creed (Kalima) - La ilaha illa Allah; Muhammad rasul Allah- “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger (prophet).” This is the confession that Muslims recite every single day and more frequently if necessary. 2. Daily Prayer (Salat)- Prayer is five times a day; they ritually wash themselves, face towards Mecca, and recite the Arabic prayer. Two cycles of prayer are in the morning and four at noon, afternoon, and night; followed by three at night. After they pray Muslims turn their heads to both sides to offer a blessing of peace to the other Muslims and all who need God’s guidance. 3. Almsgiving (Zakat) - Between two and ten percent of your income is to be shared with the poor of the community. This is a good way to help your neighbors that are less fortunate and are in need. 4.
