There are times when I just sit here and think back at what all my ancestors have had to go through in order for me to be where I am today. I have always taken an interest in the history of all African Americans because I have always believed that in order to have a better future, you have to know your past. For the most part, the story that everyone has heard about African Americans coming to America has always involved slavery. However, while doing my research on the matter, I have found that the migration has been believed to have started as early as the 1500’s with the first Africans coming from Mexico and the Caribbean to the Spanish territories of Florida, Texas, and other parts of the South. It also states that many ran away to South Carolina in 1526. In 1619 the first slaves arrived in Virginia. However, slavery was not considered to be illegal until 1787 in the Northwest Territories. In the early years when the Pilgrims settled at Plymouth Massachusetts, they had what was considered to be servants now slaves. At the age of twenty five most black servants were given their freedom.
