Unformatted text preview: Chinese 252 Names & Terms Dec. 1, 2010 Characters in Dream of the Red Chamber 1. Grandmother Ji ǎ ǐ � She is the daughter of Marquis Shi of Jinling. She is also Baoyu and Daiyu’s grandmother and the oldest and most respected authority of the Jia Clan. A doting figure, it was she who arranged for Daiyu, her only "outside" (i.e., maternal) grandchild, to come to the Rongguo Mansion. 2. Ji Zhèng ǎ ǐ � He is Baoyu’s father and assistant minister in one of the Chinese political ministries. He is also a strict disciplinarian and Confucian scholar. Zheng is the head of the Rongguo Mansion. He is a stern, worrisome father and a busy bureaucrat who often has to play host to many fawning subordinates, and he is unafraid of imposing corporal punishment on Baoyu, his eldest surviving son, much to the displeasure of Zheng's own mother Grandmother Jia, who dotes on her grandson. 3.
