Juan Pesantez Mid Term HIST 102 10/14/10 ESSAY QUESTION The foundations of modern U.S. government are laid in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, where government played a very important role for the development of this country. During the 1800s many immigrants from the east of the country started to occupy territories of the west, looking for a better life after the end of the Civil War. They also wanted to escape from the polluted urban cities of the east and start with a new life of opportunities that the Great Plains could offer. However newcomers’ positive aspirations were great, they had to face many challenges that the new land would have for them. Fortunately in some cases, these difficulties were overcome by the help of the government which helped people with land grants, and subsidies as they developed the region. (439) In addition, the intervention of the government helped to cease the corruption of the well organized structure of the big bosses in the cities thanks to Progressivism action. Millions of Eastern Americans rapidly populated the west, attracted by metals, lands for ranching and farming, and mainly by government policies that encouraged settlement which for example called people to buy plots for very low prices through the Homestead Act.
