Jason Wilcox IB SP10 Assignment 1 1. Describe Ugandan cultural attributes that might affect the operations of a foreign company doing business there. The cultural differences in Uganda that may affect companies from conducting business would be the lack of resources that many foreign companies are used to such as telecommunications and electricity. Only 5% of the Ugandan population has access to electricity putting them at a disadvantage to more developed countries. However since the country is underdeveloped to the standards of American and British companies, business’s are not heavily regulated in Uganda. The culture shock some may also have a hard time adapting to is the tribal rituals that many of the population practice. Finding workers is also often difficult because as stated above the telecommunications is not very well established and job searches normally consist of word of mouth especially through family members. In some countries the family-based group is the most important group and Uganda is one of those countries that put a high stake in family-based groups . (Daniels, 66) Language barriers could also prove to be a hurdle in conducting business in Uganda as there is not one set language in the country. The two most spoken languages in Uganda are Nilotic and Bantu and depending on the geographic location is what would decide which language in dominant. (Culture, 2010) 2. How would you describe the respective attitudes of Martin and Green: ethnocentric, polycentric, or geocentric? What factors do you suspect or having influenced their respective attitudes? Mr. Martin’s attitude toward conducting business in Uganda was focused around polycentric . The basis for his attitude could be linked to his extensive studies and work previously in Africa with the Peace Corps. Mr. Martin’s fascination with African studies
