Example Among motorcycle and bike (road and mountain) enthusiasts it is commonly stated that the front brake provides approximately two-thirds of the total braking force developed by both the front and rear wheels. If true, effective use of the front brake is essential in coming to a stop as quickly as possible. However, careful application of the brake is necessary to avoid skidding, or worse yet, flipping over the handlebars. In the figure below, a 160-lb motorcyclist is riding a 530-lb Honda VFR750 with Sportmax II D204 GP tires. These tires are rated to have a static coefficient of friction of 0.49 with dry pavement.
