Asia Bull Professor Alexander REL 3316-01 March 1, 2020 Freedom Dreams Thesis: The groundbreaking novel “Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination” by Robin D. G. Kelly analyzes historical movements, radical ideas, race relations, and freedom dreams. He encourages readers to look to marginalized black activist who “proposed a different way out of our constrictions” (21), by doing this his goal is to also encourage readers to use their imagination and dream without boundaries as the ones before them did. Summary: Robin Kelley starts the book with “When History Sleeps” which he analyzes his views on Marxism, how his mother and childhood influenced his political values, and how those views shaped into surrealism. In “Dreams of the New Land” Kelley examines the possibilities and dreams of self-determination and success within the Exodus and Garveyism movements. Kelley provides a timeline of Marxist and socialist ideas and how they integrated into Black movements in the 20 th century in the chapter “The Negro Question: Red Dreams of Black Liberation”.
