Chemistry 83 09/02/10 1 Society and Technology Background for Reports 1 and 2 Society Technology Provides needs and wants Provides oversight • Ideally, governments provide oversight by making decisions about technologies that maximize benefits and minimize risks for the greatest numbers of their citizens Benefit : anything that promotes the needs/wants of humans including economic, social, and psychological needs Risk : any hazard that diminishes safety, health, economic prosperity, quality of the environment, biodiversity, or ethical standards How does society provide oversight of technology?

Chemistry 83 09/02/10 2 A citizen provides oversight by making an informed decision and communicating his/her decision to his/ her representatives in the government To do this most effectively, a citizen should: – obtain reliable evidence (facts, statistics, or testimony) on which to base his/her decision – be scientifically literate to facilitate understanding the technology and the evidence that is obtained (scientific literacy will be provided by Chem 83) – make decisions based on reliable evidence – be able to construct compelling argument(s) to persuade decision-makers to adopt his/her point of view What kinds of information are needed to be able to make an informed decision about a technology? • Benefits with regard to: – Economics – Safety – Environmental impact – Impact on biodiversity – Ethical considerations • Risks with regard to each of the above
